Library StepsRare spiral library step shelf. Elegant and hard-to-find reproduction of Victorian piece. We can date it back to the 1940s, but collectors who have viewed the piece have said it's likely from the early 1900s, as this piece is obviously very old and that's when reproductions of these pieces were first made. Original finish. Appears to be mahogany. Ring-turned post with four spiralling fan-shaped steps (16 inches long), each inset with creamy mocha-toned leather. Each step is stamped with scrolling gilded design and edged with hand-tooled turnkey pattern embossed into the leather. Post is topped with brass finial. Lowest step 4" from ground. Some minor wear to finish, no more than usual for a piece of this age. Measures: 47" H x 16" W x 16" Price: $450.00. In researching this piece, I found that spiral library steps like this whether new or antique are selling at antique shops and auction houses for $500-$700. They're highly sought after in England, but are difficult to find there and are very uncommon here in the U.S. An identical item was recenty fought over by English antique dealers in auction on eBay and closed at $1350.00, but as I am unable to deal with shipping to England, eBay wasn't very useful for me. Many of the reproductions I have come across are brand new and, in my opinion, do not come close to the detail or quality of this piece. If interested in Library Steps, contact. All items available for pick-up in NW Oakland/Emeryville, California. |
